Missing the right chocolate for your recipe? You won’t be left without a replacement, thanks to these substitutes for semisweet chocolate, baking chocolate, and unsweetened chocolate. We even have healthy chocolate substitutes to help you satisfy those chocolate cravings guilt-free.

Semisweet Chocolate Substitutes:

For 1 ounce semisweet chocolate, substitute 3 tablespoons semisweet chocolate pieces or 1 ounce unsweetened chocolate plus 1 tablespoon sugar.

Sweet Baking Chocolate Substitute:

For 4 ounces sweet baking chocolate, substitute 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder plus 1/3 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon cooking oil or shortening, melted.

Unsweetened Chocolate Substitute:

For 1 ounce unsweetened chocolate, substitute 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder plus 1 tablespoon cooking oil or shortening, melted.

Healthy Chocolate Substitutes:

For 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips, substitute 1/4 cup semisweet mini chocolate chips.

  • Using fewer chocolate chips cuts calories, carbohydrates, sugar, fat, and saturated fat. Mini chocolate chips go further so it doesn’t seem as though there are fewer of them.

For 1 ounce unsweetened baking chocolate, substitute 3 tablespoons natural, unsweetened cocoa or carob powder plus 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, canola oil, or soft margarine.

  • Because carob is sweeter than cocoa, reduce the sugar in the recipe by 25 percent.
  • Unsweetened chocolate is lower in calories, carbohydrates, and fat but higher in saturated fat than the cocoa powder mixture.
